The Merrimack Brewers are entering the upcoming baseball season with added motivation and spirit following the tragic passing of long-time player, manager, and former G.S.B.L. President Robert “Bob” Gould. A pillar of the GSBL community for 21 years. Bob's presence as a player, manager, and president of the league left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication and unwavering commitment to the game and the league were unmatched, as he tirelessly worked to foster growth and stability during challenging times. Bob's leadership and kindness extended far beyond the field. He selflessly devoted himself to the well-being and development of his players, always putting their needs and aspirations above his own. His passion for the game was only surpassed by his genuine care and concern for those around him, making him not just a coach or teammate, but a true friend to all. Bob's legacy in the GSBL will forever be remembered for the positive impact he had on the lives of those he touched. His legacy of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and dedication will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the exceptional individual he was both on and off the field. He will be missed dearly by all involved with the team and league.
Jack Kelley entering his 7th season with the team has stepped up to take over as the new manager, aiming to lead the team to success after a challenging 4-10 record in the previous season. Despite the absence of key players like 4x Brewers team MVP Foster St Cyr and Camden Guay, who are taking the year off, the Brewers are determined to make a playoff run with a mix of new faces and a solid core of returning players.
Returning players such as Steve Crow, Graham Covert, Anthony Hall, Matt Iandoli, Jack Kelley, Andrew Santos, and James Mancini bring valuable experience and talent to the team. Jack Kelley was 2nd on the Brewers in 2023 behind St Cyr in on-base percentage (.475), while Steve Crow enters his impressive 14th season with the Brewers. He will look to continue as Captain, handling this staff of impressive young arms behind the plate. Graham Covert had a breakout season at the plate with a batting average of .391, and impactful rookies Matt Iandoli. Andrew Santo, and James Mancini returning to build off last season. Iandoli showcased his speed with 11 stolen bases, and ability to get on base with a .420 OBP. Santo made a notable impact in his rookie season, contributing both at the plate leading the team in Home runs and RBIs and on the mound, while Mancini also proved to be a versatile player in his rookie year. Throwing 29 innings posting a 1-2 record with 2 complete games, while hitting .379 in 29 ABs
On the pitching front, James Mancini is expected to lead the staff, supported by the return of Scott Campbell after a season away from the team. The Brewers will rely on their pitching depth and the leadership of Campbell, and Mancini to anchor the rotation while a bullpen of young arms such as Senus, Iandoli, Santos, Maximiliano and Hall are set up to keep the team in contention throughout the season.
A new talent emerged on the scene for the Brewers during the 2023 fall season, Jonathan Maximiliano will look to prove himself as another versatile weapon for the Brewers on the field, mound and plate. Keep an eye out for this ROY candidate.
With a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, the Merrimack Brewers are poised to overcome challenges and compete for a playoff spot in the upcoming season. The team's unity, determination, and the spirit of their late manager, Bob Gould, will drive them to strive for success on the field.
